Crinkle Scarf Tutorial

Did you all see Dana's adorable scarf yesterday? I'm still thinking about how cut it is....

And, coincidentally, I have my own scarf to share as well! (Although, let's be honest, hers is cuter!)

I love those crinkly scarves you see everywhere in the stores, don't you? So breezy and summery! Unfortunately, they're chemically treated to stay that way, so it's hard to replicate.

But although this scarf's crinkle isn't quite ever-lasting, it will stay wrinkled between washes! And to make it wrinkled again, just twist and let dry! Nice and easy! :o)

The first step, is to find out if your material is crinkle-worthy, test a little corner by twisting it a little, and see if it leaves behind some wrinkles; a light-weight cotton will probably work best!

1: Cut a 13"x60" rectangle, and slice three-inch long slits every half-inch across each end:

2: Sew a narrow hem on the long sides of the scarf:

3: Dampen your scarf by spraying it with water, or running it under the facet.

4: Then twist the ends in opposite directions as tightly as they will go, and tie the ends in a loose knot. Hang to dry, or throw in the dryer.

5: Pull out the short, horizontal threads in your slits to fray, and then tie a knot at the top.

Then you have a cute little crinkled scarf with frayed edges!

You can either leave it plain, and fasten it with a pretty broach (I won this gorgeous one in a giveaway, but you can get the tutorial at Love 2 Create!)

Or you can print this image:

Trace it onto a non-fraying fabric, like knit, felt or nylon chiffon. (I used knit, which was a little difficult to cut out, but I liked the way the flexibility of the fabric made the butterfly wings "flutter"!)

Then pin your butterflies on your scarf:

And machine or hand-stich around the butterfly body.

You can also add an "X" stitch to each wing to secure a little more. I threaded some sparkly seed beads on my needle for every other stitch because I was feeling fancy:

All done!

The best way to store it is wadding it up in your sock drawer. (just my style!) :o)

To get the wrinkle again after you've washed it, just twist the edges again and let dry!

I think this one is going to be my mom's Mother's Day present. (Uh.....surprise, mom!)

I spent too long fraying those edges for it to go to anyone else! :o)

But I'll keep this one for myself! :o)

I wanted this one to be a bit more casual, so I didn't cut slits in the ends, I just left it un-hemmed and let it fray a little.
