I Need Help!

I've been thinking about how to decorate my living room this autumn for about two months now (have I mentioned that I love fall?). Well now it is right around the corner and.....I got nothin'! You would think: "fall, easy! Orange, red, leaves, pumkins!", right? Hate orange. Hate red. Can't find peach and brown pumpkins. Yes, peach, brown, and neutral-y ivory shades (like the walls and sofas in the photos) are the colors that I am obsessed with lately (see J. Crew's women's clothing line), and I'm having the toughest time deciding how to make that look autumn-y.
Soo......any ideas?? I know that you all have got all kinds of fantastic decor ideas up your sleeves, so lay them on me! (please don't make me beg!)

Here are some photos of what my living/dining area looks like right now:

They share an area, and it's kind of small. But nice and open!

The dining room is exceptionally bare! I can't figure out how to make it cozy!

Hmm.
Any ideas would be so greatly appreciated! As always, I hope you guys are having a fantastic day!

  1. I'm thinking that you just need some pumpkins and lots of brown leaves. Maybe put a basket or two of pumpkins around the rooms. As for the color orange, you actually have a couple of options. There are real white pumpkins. I'm not sure what area you're in, but my grocery store will start carrying them in a few weeks. Also, my craft store carries pumpkins that are made from branches (similar to the branches that are used to make wreaths). I tried unsuccessfully to find a picture of some online for you, but they are a great brown color. I think that you would like them if you can find them. A third option is to spray paint either real or wooden pumpkins to match your decor. If you want them to last, I would definitely go with the wooden pumpkins. Just some thoughts...hope they help.

  2. White pumpkins exist! They're even making white "funkins" now (the fake craft pumpkins). Or you could always pull a Martha and use gourds (there are crazy looking ones in lots of colors). Or spray paint and glitter your pumpkins.

There are also a lot of beigeish silk flowers at craft stores that would be gorgeous in a coppery-brown vase.

  3. Spray paint pumpkins in the colors you want, like this: http://thediyshowoff.blogspot.com/2009/09/week-1-diy-show-off-fall-festival.html

  4. Hmmm. I don't know. Lately I've just been drawing a blank on creativity.

I'm sure whatever you do it will look fabulous!

  6. They hit the nail on the head with the white pumpkins or painting them the colors you want. To cozy up your dining room in general...you need to center and hang your chandelier closer to your table. I wonder if you are able to take the glass shades off replace with little canvas shades. It would also look beautiful painted black.

You need to find a fabric in the colors you want and make placemats and cozy seat cushions. I also think it would make it cozy and less "bare" if the scale of your wall decor was bigger.

I love your shelf and white dishes...super martha, super cute. I think I just decided to paint my built ins black and do the same thing.

Corn Stalks and Dried Wheat wreaths and bundles are also very fall and not offensively orange.

  7. Hey! Decor looks great. Autumn advice: white, brown, and a rich mauve leaves, pumpkins, candles (!), etc. Maybe a deep mauze throw pillow with bronzy-brown leaf applique.

Dining room cozy advice: definitely some table linens. I have small children too, and I keep a 36 inch runner in the middle of my table that provides coziness but stays totally out of the way (and doesn't get messy). And I think your wall or walls would look great with a white beadboard on the bottom half to two-thirds. That would break up the long , kinda empty wall, and nothing seems as cozy (and simple) as beadboard!

I'm following you on my blog as well. Pop in sometime I might have a neat idea for you. www.beautifulhandmadebyme.blogspot.com

P.S. I love Jesus, too! So neat to other Christians out there!

  8. Maybe this link will help: http://theidearoom.blogspot.com/2009/09/fabric-pumpkins.html

You can use any fabric you want, so you can avoid the oranges and reds!

Good luck! Can't wait to see what you come up with!

  9. Well, firstly, you have a gorgeous house!! And I would love to live there. But in terms of ideas for Autumn, maybe you could put in a few warm tones, browns, mustard yellows, deep oranges - thats what i think of when i think autumn.

  10. What about a dark golden or rustic yellow. Our design scheme is the same as yours only with some darker beige (think Benjamin Moore Shaker beige). One of my favourite fall decorating items are some dark brown gourds and branches from IKEA. They go up in the fall naked, then get lights and Christmas balls in the winter, then eggs and flowers in Spring. Check out the blog Toast and Table, specifically the October 22 2007 entry, it is beautiful inspiration.
