I love the look of tone-on-tone ruffle shirts, but frankly it's really hard to find extra jersey to add to shirts in the same color! So I thought of making these "picture" tees with jersey scraps that I had lying around from other shirts I've cut up in the past.
This leaf shirt was made from a black onesie, an old stained tank top, scraps from this scarf, and some red jersey from a thrift store.
Just cut a few strips of each color, sew a line down them with a long stitch, and pull the bottom thread to ruffle....
...pin them in the pattern you want, and sew them on!
Here are some other ones I did:
(sorry the shirts are wrinkled! I didn't have time to iron them)
I thought at first I would do a heart on this pink one....then I thought maybe a "P"....
But I ended up doing a flower!
If you wanted to make one for a boy's shirt, you could just skip the ruffling and sew on the strips in the shape of boyish things! Puppies, trucks, monsters, sailboats, skateboards...there are so many possibilities! I could make a million! (Christmas presents!) :o)

I was thinking the same thing, that you wouldn't always have another T of the same color on hand and that I would experiment with using different colored shirts. Cute designs.

I love how you can take a t and make it so much better by adding stuff! I also think you can get away with so much more with kids stuff so you can add all the color you want and it always looks cute on kids!
New follower here. I love that idea. Sorry if this is a basic question, but since I'm still learning, do you hand stitch the ruffle on or do you sew it by machine? If you machine sew, which setting do you like to use?

I love the boy idea! I actually made a shirt for my sister, she saw one on anthropologie and I said I can do that!! I just cut skinny strips of fabric and sewed them on the top in the shape of flowing flowers. Wish I took a pic.:( Thanks for another great idea!

How do you keep the strips from fraying? I am new to working with jersey. Should I use small pinking shears?

Anonymous: You don't have to worry about fraying with jersey fabric. That's the beauty of it! It doesn't fray, even after you wash it! Hooray!!
