It's a Playdress!

15 minutes.

That's how long it took me to make this dress!

One stained t-shirt + 1/2 yard of super cute polka-dotted jersey.

Cut the top of the t-shirt off, and measure all the way around the bottom edge. Cut fabric that is twice that measurement by whatever length you choose, and gather one side of it. (sew with a long strait stitch, and pull one of the threads to gather)

When it's gathered to the same length as your shirt, pin your gathered edge to the bottom of the t-shirt, right sides facing each other.

And sew it on with a zig-zag!

If you have more stains to hide, cut a few inches of strips of extra fabric, and use what I call the "wad and roll" method to create "flowers". Pin, and sew on with your machine!

This dress reminds me of Hanna Andersson's "It's a Playdress, It's a Daydress!" dress. Super comfy and versatile!

Perfect for having tea with friends....

Fulfilling your royal duties...

Catching up on important studies...

Or just simply playing little girl games. :o)

Have a fun day!!

  12. Ahhhh, I used a straight stitch..guess a zigzag stitch is the secret to success. I tried this right before Christmas because I had heard how easy it was, but I somehow messed it up. Guess I will try again.
    Very adorable by the way, the dress and your daughter. (-;

  32. That's adorable! I've seen a similiar tutorial but it was with a bow and used cotton so it was a little more complicated - this jersey is great and easy to use. I also love the flowers you added!

  33. I second the request for your jersey source. I can't seem to find good jersey anywhere, let alone jersey with a print! *swoon*
I can't wait to make this for my 3 month old girl! I may just sew it on the Onesie without cutting it off...just a thought!

Rachel was sitting on my lap while I was reading your blog, and she noticed the Goldelicious book (she has a copy too), gasped and said, "Just like me! huh?", and she was so excited about it.
Ah... little girls- ruffles, pink, dresses... Precious.

  51. Love! Was thinking of just such a dress. My 4 year old has multiple hand me down solid t's and she likes when the have "pretty designs" on them. A dress...even better. Passing on an easy idea...I've been taking many of her "too small" summer dresses and creating "just right" skirts out of them.

  60. Hi! I'm getting ready to make this and think I'm missing a step... after gathering the top do you need to sew the side edges of the knit fabric together to create a "tube" (one continuous circle of fabric)? Maybe this is a "duh, yes you do" thing, but I wanted to be sure since I'm a newbie to sewing.
As always, thanks for the wonderful tutorials!

OH, and I found a JACKPOT of a site for knit jersey fabrics. I saw that several people commented and asked where you could buy some. I was wondering the same thing a couple weeks ago and someone told me about this online store that has incredible prices and top quality knits. Check out my post if you (or anyone else out there) wants super cute and inexpensive knits!

  66. The dress is just wonderful! And Her Royal Highness looks tres magnifique. The photo of Her Highness squinting to see her royal subjects is priceless. What an honor to be the Official Dressmaker for the Princess. Your work is outstanding, and I wish you many, many years of joyful creating! Thank you for sharing these photos from the Palace!

I myself served in a similar capacity until my Princess grew up and married her Prince. We are now anxiously awaiting the arrival of grand-princesses and grand-princes for future joyful employment.
