No-Sew Fabric Flower Tutorial

Good morning to you!!
What better way to greet the morning than with flowers? Flowers that don't involve sewing. :O) Yay!

They are so easy. (It's scandalous!)

(Aaaand, we're just going to pretend today that all these photos were blurry on purpose. It's artistic...yeah...that's it!) :o)

Very artistic. :o)

My Punkin!
I love her. She ate about 2 pounds of strawberries today. (Literally!)

These flowers are so quick, you'll want to make one for every person you know. Let's make some!

1. We're going to start with some circles.
Trace a mug or glass or anything circular onto paper for your pattern. (Choose a circle that is the same size that you want your finished flower to be.) Use your pattern to cut 7 circles of your desired fabric. (I like using knit or nylon because it won't fray. If you're using a fabric that frays, use fray check on the edges after you cut your circles) Then cut one circle out of felt, about half the size of your 7 circles.

Shown: seven 3" satin circles with another seven 3" in chiffon. I layered the chiffon with the satin for a little extra fanciness. 2" felt circle.
2., 3. Fold your circles in half, then in half again.
4. Snip off the tip and hot glue four of the folded circles to the felt piece. They should fit together snugly, with a small open square in the center.
5. Fold, snip and glue the last three in the center of the flower.
6. Add a button, bead or broach (I like these) in the center.
7. Glue a safety pin or hair clip (both!) to the back! Done!

Try cutting out your circles with pinking shears, too!
You can also make things a little fancier by snipping 5 little triangles out of your circles to make petal shapes:

Super fun, super easy!

But I have to warn you, they are kind of addicting!

If you're big into the craft blogging world, you may have seen this tutorial around, I certainly have. But I just recently got around to trying them. Goodness! I didn't even know! They are so fun to make! I hope you make some. You could even whip up a couple before a certain holiday tomorrow. I'm sure you already have a gift ready for Mom, but why not throw a flower or two on the top of the box? Much better than a paper bow.

:o)

Hope you're having a great weekend!
Love,
Disney

  8. I REALLY needed this tutorial! thank you! I'm making a hair accessory for a friend who is getting married next weekend! yikes! QUESTION: I am guessing all the embellishments are beads or buttons - but do you think I could make the one with the little beads by buying a strand and somehow knotting it or gluing it together? I need a blue button or emmbellisment for the center and I don't have one - and don't know that I will find one soon enough - thanks! Ann

  10. Where did you find the awesome beaded centers?? Did you make them or buy them, so cute!! I love making flowers and those look so great in the center.

  11. So cute and fun and pretty! So nice to see you around a bit more these days, Disney!

  12. The beaded centers are vintage clip earrings that didn't have mates. Ann: I think you could totally do it with a strand of seed beads! That's a great idea.

  13. I just started making these too but with needle and thread....which was time-consuming, fiddly and made my fingers sore! Hurrah for glue guns! Thanks, Disney :) xx

  21. I have made these in the past, but a little differently...I just made one "your way", and I like the outcome so much better! thanks! I whipped up a little pink knit one with a white button for my daughter ! she'll be darling!
QUESTION: what are you attaching to the back to get it to slide on the headband? and stay on the headband without falling off? are you gluing them on? thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Ashley: Haha, um, I actually used Scotch tape to attach them to headbands to be honest. But only because I was just displaying them that way for the tutorial. I normally hot glue them. :o)

  41. My sister and I just had a fabric flower making party this weekend thanks to this. (we will probably be having another one soon. Our older sister came over and saw them). We LOVE these. I dont know if you have tried it yet, but it looks extremely cute if you take silk flowers and do this same thing. Adorable!

  42. Ok, so i've never done this before tonight and my first attempt does not look so good. I'm kind of lost on the last step when adding the final 3 circles. I'm wanting to add a button in the center but there is no center. What am I doing wrong. Please help...

    ReplyDelete
  43. Anon: The 3 center petals sort of stand up a little, as in photo 4 in the tutorial. There isn't an exact center, so just glue the button in one of the folds of the center petal. :o) Hope that helps!

  44. Looks like you posted these a long time ago, but I love these. Can't wait to try making them. Great post!
