What Was I Thinking??

Can you believe it? We cut Paige's hair for the first time! The story above is what I'm telling myself, but I confess that I am totally depressed about it now. Sob! Her beautiful, long hair! Granted, 5 minutes after it was brushed it was so stringy that she looked like a street urchin, but who cares about that now? It's gone!

They say that when people have a part of their body amputated they can experience depression; does that count for hair, too? And what if it's technically part of your daughter's body? Am I still OK?

I know, I know. It will grow. :o) And I'll get used to it. Maybe what's really making me sad is that it doesn't look as much like her...it doesn't feel like the same little punkin! I'm sure it will soon. In the mean time, I thank the Lord that I have a healthy daughter, with lovely hair, whatever the length. She's still the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.

Hope you're having a good day!
Love,
-Disney

  1. Oh my gosh I know just how you feel! I had my 2 year olds sweet locks cut this spring cause she was such a rascal about letting me wash/brush/style it in any way. It's taken a bit to get used to, but it's so easy now and I know she loves it! I think Paige's hair is ADORABLE! Plus, it will grow back in a heartbeat!

  6. She is looking so much like you, in the shape of her face and her cheeks. Change is always strange at first, but think how much easier to wash, detangle and brush! Paige looks adorable with her hair any which way!

  7. Dear Disney,

You daughter is the best sight my eyes had laid on today. She is so B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L! i totally love her dimples.

She looks great with long and short hair. It'll grow back, given half a chance. In the meantime, you and your little punkin will have loads of fun exploring new hairstyles and accessories. Trust me on this.

  9. reminds me of my mom, i didn't have my hair cut, except for the occasional trim, until i was 17 when i decided on a whim to chop hair that was almost down to my knees up to my chin. my mom cried

  10. It's very adorable like this. Where did you learn to cut hair like that? Her layers are perfect! I think it brings out her sweet dimples :)

  12. Hi Disney!
ok, A) there is nothing but nothing that could keep Paige from being the cutest little girl ever, and this is no exception. She is a doll. You have mad hair cutting skillz too.

and b) I did the exact same thing with my daughter at that age and even told everyone she looked like an amputee to me. SO glad I'm not the only one who's had that thought and regretted something as relatively silly as a haircut. Of course, now it's back to that original long length :) but after that one cut, it's much easier to manage now. Maybe if you grow Paige's out you'll find it to be the same.

    have a tangle-free day!

  13. I am right there with you. I just took my daughter out for a girls night out the other day and we cut about 8 inches off her hair!!! It is still past her shoulders now but wow it was tough. My baby girl is turning 5 this week and I guess I am going to have to get used to her appearance changing because she sure is on the inside too. Why do they have to grow up so fast? Your girl's haircut is adorable though!

  15. She looks adorable! I can imagine what you are experiencing though I'm already thinking about that first haircut and cringing.
Good job and letting her express herself!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Wow! She looks so grown up! I love the cut, but I also know the sadness of hair cutting remorse!

    ReplyDelete
  17. She looks adorable!! Her hair was so long - did you donate it to Locks of Love?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I cutted my hair after 7 years this winter... I was a bit depressed, but it's growing now!!! She looks great!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. It looks great! And then it will get fuller and she can grow it out again in no time! I bet she will like it!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. She's as cute as ever, Disney. Cuter, if that's possible! Which camera do you use? These photos can make great posters.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh she looks so cute!!! I love the first picture and the picture with the pigtails =D

    ReplyDelete
  22. She looks adorable! Paige is going to be one of those lucky girls that can pull off any look at any length. Someone who can look like a different person with a change of hair. I think it's perfect, and like you said, if you don't like it....it will always grow back :-) Only this time it won't be full of baby fine hair! Yay for first hair cuts!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think her new haircut is adorable!

    ReplyDelete
  24. That picture story was just too adorable! And even more so because your daughter is such a beauty. :) I think she looks fabulous! And yes, it will grow back! :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. She is so cute...and her hair will grow back and be souch healthier and happy;-). Mom will be ok and it isn't like my first Mom haircut a pixie and I looked like a boy :-(

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think the new cut is ADORABLE! But I can imagine that the first cut is always a little traumatic for everyone. But I'm sure soon enough, you won't even notice anymore. Still too cute for words!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Her hair looks so freaking cute!!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. It IS hair and it DOESN'T matter, and I"m proud of you for telling yourself that. However, it really does change the way she looks, and I completely understand your feeling that way! Honestly, from these pictures, I'm not at all surprised. She looks so grown-up now! What a little cutie pie you have there.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I LOVE the new haircut. She looks DARLING!

    ReplyDelete
  30. She really looks darling with shorter hair. You are right, it will grow and may even be nicer as it grows back in.

I have 3 granddaughters I felt the same way about. But when each of them cut their hair, it was donated to Locks of Love to make wigs for those that have lost their hair. So far they have donated 46 inches worth of long THICK hair--blond, brunette and a gorgeous red-auburn! Even though I prefer their hair long, I thrill to think of the blessing it is to those that can't grow their own. So let Paige grow hers long again & when you're ready for something a bit different, consider Locks of Love.

  31. She looks super cute with the new haircut! I know it's tough now, but I think you will grow to love it, and I bet it'll be easier to care for, too!

    ReplyDelete
  32. It looks good, did you do it yourself?
On the plus side research shows the children who had their hair cut on a regular basis experienced faster growing hair as an adult, so Paige will thank you later in life when she does a drastic bob (we all do it at some point) but her hair grows back quickly. Fret not.

    ReplyDelete
  33. You did a great job - her hair is adorable. I want to give my 3.5 year old a cute little bob (she has bangs). She won't hear of it though. My hair is mid-back and I want to cut it just above my shoulders.. you're right, it's just hair and grows back!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Don't feel to bad. It loos really cute short too!

    ReplyDelete
  35. She looks adorable with her new do! I was about 4 or 5 when my mom cut my long curly hair. She said I wanted it, though I have no memory. It made combing my hair a lot easier, anyway!

    ReplyDelete
  36. i had the same panic the first time i cut my daughters hair (and my sons, for that matter...) but after a couple days, i like it so much better. i hope that happens for you too!

besides, the new cut is really really darling. i love it.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Wow - those dimples are adorable! I never noticed them before the hair cut. I think that less hair gives shows more of Paige's beautiful face off. She looks more grown up which is perhaps why you feel a little sad. Best wishes.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I can fix this. Right now it's kind of long but not really. You are going to style it like when she had long hair, but it won't look quite the same, and you are going to keep crying for the next year. My solution is to cut more off. Like bottom of the neck, and blunt -- maybe a bob. She will look AMAZING (not that she isn't adorable right now), and it won't be like she has long hair but she doesn't.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think it looks darling that way!!

    ReplyDelete
  40. hi disney!
i think paige looks THAT cute with the new haircut. no reason to be sad about it.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think it looks better, if that's at all possible. She looks like a little lady. Very pretty!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I LOVE IT!!!! i think it makes her hair look super healthy and bouncy :) plus to keep your hair healthy it neeeds trims :) shes adorable :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. She's still as cute as ever! :) And yep....it will grow long again.... no worries! :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'm partial to short hair, so I love it and think it looks great!

    ReplyDelete
  45. She is still cute as ever!!!

And it will grow back(I have to keep telling myself that too because, I cut my long hair off awhile back and now I am missing it ever SO much!! I told Moma that I will NEVER cut it short again!!)

    ReplyDelete
  46. I LOVE it!!! I think she looks adorable with her cute new cut!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Cuttest post ever :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. My sister and I went ages without cutting our hair, but when we finally did, it ended up being a great thing. It's easier to take care of when it's short, so it's much better for being a little kid with. My parents were sad, too, when we cut our hair, though. Kind of a "growing up" thing.

    ReplyDelete
  49. It looks so, so, SO adorable! You did a great job!

    ReplyDelete
  50. She does look cute. I cut my 2.5 yr old daughter's hair because she was in a wedding. I cried :( She had long curly hair, but it was very uneven (kinda looked like a mullet). It looks cute now too, but I miss the hair that we cut off.

    ReplyDelete
  51. The first time is always the hardest ;) I usually let my hair grow for about a year, sometimes two, then I get sick of it and cut it. Mostly very short. Or in mohawks. Currently I have 5 dreadlocks I cherish dearly and otherwise nice, long hair...but it's hot here during summer and I'm thinking about cutting it real short again ;)

I have always had the freedom to do whatever I want with my hair and today I am very very thankful for that - my Mom never forced any hairstyle on me and always let me decide...even when she thought my choice wasn't the best. I had all kinds of colors, all kinds of lengths and hairstyles. I believe that's the healthiest way of dealing with your daughters hair. Just let her decide. She will find herself through that, she will learn, that her actions and decisions have consequences and she will feel free in her opinion- and decision-making. It will grow back after all. And it is just hair. Just another way for Paige to express herself! After all it's part of HER, not part of YOU ;)

So swallow the tears and don't get used to the new hairstyle too much...who knows, what she wants in half a year ;)

    ReplyDelete
  52. She looks even cuter now! That hair length is lovely on her.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Oh my goodness! I love it so much! She looks adorable. :)

Comfortable, familiar things are nice... But it's just not much of a life if everyhing's comfortable and familiar. Sometimes you've just gotta cut your hair.

  54. My fifth child was completely bald until she was over two years old. She finally started getting hair and it came in beautiful thick curls. It was our pride and joy. She is three now and it was finally starting to get that darling little ringlet look (but still close to her head). Last week my fourth child was fixing her hair and then suddenly decided to give her a hair cut. I walked into the bathroom to see the entire floor covered in beautiful, precious curls.

So, I know just what you mean - it's "just hair" and "it grows back" but there is something special, and a joy that we get from looking at our children and their features countless times through the day, and it's a real loss when that is altered.

    ReplyDelete
  55. it'll grow back! I don't have attachments to my daughters' hair, supposedly this makes me very strange. I took my oldest for a bob a few years ago, she had really long hair, the hairstylist thought I was crazy for letting her do it!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I agree it makes her look different, but I also agree with most other responses that she looks adorable. I love it!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Aww.. it's so easy to get attached to long hair, but she still looks ADORABLE. :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. I LOVE her hair cut. I think it really suits her.

    ReplyDelete
  59. OOOOOH! I love love LOVE the haircut! It's precious!

    ReplyDelete
  60. she's too cute! i remember my mom crying after i got my dad to cut my hair really short while she was running errands once - apparently i looked so much older :) so it's totally understandable. but she is absolutely precious either way.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I think she is such a doll she could have no hair and still be just as adorable! Hair can be a very emotional thing, im not quite sure on the psycology behind it but remember when crazy britany spears shaved her head? and I have noticed with both of my pregnancies I chopped all my hair to shoulder length, and Im totally a long hair kinda gal. Anyways, you did a great job on the cut! it looks really cute :-)

    ReplyDelete
  62. My mom insisted on keeping my hair long when I was little and it too was stringy like a street urchin. When we finally cut a lot of it off, it grew back thicker and was easier to manage. Plus, I stopped having the wispy hair of a baby and had little kid hair. It will all turn out fine :)

    ReplyDelete
  63. awwww. so cute! I love the cut! and the little story :)

  64. she is cutest and love the story it heart touching. Love this blog following you.

  65. My daughter just turned 5 and we still haven't cut her's. We'll see how long I can hold out! Lol

    ReplyDelete
  66. I guess I have never understood the desire to never want to cut my childs hair. I dont think hair thats super long is very attractive but anyways thats my preference.

I think her haircut is just darling! I love it!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Her new haircut is stinking ADORABLE!! Don't be sad!! A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E!!

  68. http://24sieben.wordpress.com/2011/05/16/confessions-of-a-dangerous-mom/

It's all in German but basically the same story as yours. Only that I cut it because she was throwing tantrums every.single.morning when I had to braid her hair. (But it all got worse after cutting it because it's so THICK and SLICK that it won't stay put anymore.) - The sadness will pass eventually. To be honest, it took me quite a while but now I'm over it. Almost. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  69. It is absolutely adorable! I am with you, though. I will be so sad when Lillie decides she wants a hair cut!

    ReplyDelete
  70. What a lovely girl! Beautiful :-)

    ReplyDelete
  71. Oops, sorry I think that my comment got sucked off b/4 I finished! Well, anyway... we have 3 daughter and a son. But the oldest girl had beautiful long... and thick hair. So much so that when pulled into a pony tail... honestly... the hank of it was almost as thick as a real pony's tail. It took forever to wash and dry and as she got a bit older she was tired of it. So.... we cut it! She was really happy about it, and she really looked different. But, in the end, it was her choice right? Like you say... hair grows. Our family's hair grows at least if not more than an inch a month.... so if your daughters is anything like ours... it will grow back... probably thicker and healthier!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Hey there. I must agree with everyone else...your daughter is super cute with long or short hair. Did you by chance donate her hair to any of the many organizations out there that make wigs for cancer patients? I recently grew out my hair and cut it off to donate it. It is a nice thing knowing that you helped someone in that small way. Take care. I love your blog.

    ReplyDelete
  73. This is my first time reading your blog so i have history with knowing what Paige used to look like, but i can tell you that the haircut she is sporting is DARLING. She looks cute as a button and like a little girl who just on the verge of becoming a big girl. You did a nice job with the scissors. Never regret.
