Did you know...that you can make new earrings with a button and a paperclip?
True story!
I've been trying to think of a way for us to make some earrings without having to buy supplies. Buying the beads and all the findings can really add up. :o( Sad.
But-oh, what? Walmart sells lots of pretty little buttons like this for less than $2. Excellent! :o)
That still leaves the findings. But who needs those when you have a paperclip? Try this:
- Clip the top of the paperclip off with wire cutters:
- Snap off the button shanks:
- Glue the paperclip to the back of the button. (If your button has holes like mine, you can also bend the clip into a circle and hang the button on it.)
- Open the loop at the bottom of your earring hook by bending it outward and hook it onto your paper clip. Bend back.
And...pretty new earrings!
Walmart was out of gold sparkly ones (I like gold.) but here are some cute ones I found on Walmart.com(about $1-$2):
And some cute ones on Etsy:
This Etsy shop has infinity cute buttons, you have to see it.
(click photos to see where to buy them!)
Of course, you may have some on hand just waiting to use! Better check your button box. :O)
Hope you enjoy.
Have a great Sunday! Oh, wait...technically it's Monday now.
Have a great Monday!! :O)
Love you,
Disney

Great tutorial! I love vintage buttons and this would be a great way to use them in a new way!
Excellent idea!
Love this! What a clever button upcycle - you are such a smarty pants! In the best way.
Great idea! And what about keeping a part of the paper clip open when gluing it, so that they can become interchangeable earrings?
Thanks for sharing!

I have seen button earrings before and have never really liked them. These I love!!! I may have to raid my button jar today :o) Thank you for sharing another wonderful project with us! It's nice to see your postings more often. You always inspire me to take a second look at what I have.
Easy and great idea. I featuring this at somedaycrafts.blospot.com
Wow you have snow! I wish we did, all we've seen so far is a teensy tiny bit of frost... Mostly on the roofs too, have to be in the attic to even *see* it...
Lovely little tutorial, all I hope is that the glue will stick!
Deirdre and Bobonne: use any strong holding glue like Super Glue or E600, etc. (Something I think everyone needs to have in their house!) Hot glue probably won't hold up long-term. :o)
Once again, thank you for sharing your creativity.
I'm trying to find a polite way to say this.... ummmm... YOU'RE A GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!! Honestly!! I would have NEVER thought of doing this!!! Thanks for sharing!!!!!

Very inspiring Disney!
They're lovely!
What a great idea! They're so pretty.
I bought those same pink rose buttons from Wal Mart and I have been staring at them trying to figure what I could make them in to. They were too cheap and too cute to pass up. I also bought them in red. So, now I have a great idea. Thanks.
wow Disney, you're the MacGyver of the craft world!
Great idea! I love making jewelry and this is a nifty little way to do that if you out of supplies! Thanx!

Honestly, had I seen a pic of this earring without the tutorial, I would have guessed they´re by some fancy designer and cost a few hundred bucks. Awesome.
Wow, first pair of earrings are beautfil, initially thought they were vintage with real diamonds. fantastic job.
so fun and so many possibilities! Pinning!
thanks!
What an inspiration you are... thank you so much for sharing... your earrings are divine... <3

great idea!thanx for sharing
I think these button earrings look beautiful. Another thing I noticed is how nice your craft photos are. I've always wanted mine to look that clear and well-lit. Do you have any tips for a novice craft blogger?
Brilliant! I inherited both my grandmothers' button boxes and this is a great way to use some of them.
Oooh those are really pretty. I would never have guessed they were just buttons!
I have just discovered your blog! And I am in heaven! Thank you sooo much for sharing.
What sort of glue do you use to hold this together?
Thanks for sharing this, and for the images of how they turned out. I was looking to somehow break out of using the same old beads and it does get pricey if you want anything a little fancy.
I already own those buttons-so excited to see them as cute earrings.
Oh so pretty..I love this idea!!! really cute....
Love your tutorial Disney! I've featured it on my blog: the-beekeepers-wife.blogspot.com
These are so cute. I am not sure my ears could handle using a paper clip because they are very sensitive to most metals. I love this idea though, I may have to try it out anyway...
Emma: here's a post I did about shooting nicer photos: http://www.rufflesandstuff.com/2010/03/few-photo-tips.html
Erin: I used a glue called "welder", any type or brand of super glue will probably due just fine. :O)
Emilia: The paperclip is just to attach the button to the earring hook so it shouldn't touch your skin. :o)
I totally just made a ring out of the very same button! I LOVE that button!!!
Wow - this is amazing! :D
Great! Looking forward to doing this with some vintage pieces! Thank you.

What a great idea! You inspired me to make some post earrings this way. I just cut the shanks off and used e6000 to glue blank posts to the back. Gorgeous and lightweight, since the buttons are plastic! Thank you!
Paperclips are really, really not a good idea. You can trigger allergies using them.
J Hartley: the paper clips should be just fine, they won't even touch your skin at all. :O)
