Garden Veggies Skirt Tutorial for Skirt Week!

Crafterhours is hosting their annual Skirt Week this week and they asked me share a tutorial. Fun! I almost said no, because, seriously, I feel like I've made every kind of skirt I could possibly come up with. But I like a challenge, and I'm allergic to saying "no". Especially to ladies and sweet and wonderful as Susan and Adrianna! I can't tell you how much I love them. They drip with sweetness.

Instead of coming up with a complicated skirt design ('cause I really don't enjoy complicated sewing, to be real) I thought I'd decorate a simple skirt in a new way! (Please don't hate me because I paint fabric in every post now.)

So, have you ever painted with veggies? My mom used to do this with us when we were little, but I haven't done it in ages! We always used celery, but I thought I'd invite Mrs. Broccoli and Mr. Carrot to join in the fun!

Carrots for polka dots, broccoli for dandelions and celery for...roses? Dahlias? Well...flowers.

Because sometimes you should be able to play with your food!

Especially the healthy stuff!

How to:

Veggie fabric painting

Step by step instructions:
  • Cut a carrot and a stalk of celery off a few inches from the bottom and a small bunch of broccoli with stem attached.
  • Dip the carrot into one of three different acrylic paint colors, dab onto a plate a couple of times, and press onto fabric repeatedly to make a polka-dot pattern.
  • Once the dots are dry (use a hair dryer to speed things up), dip broccoli into the next color of paint and gently dab off excess paint. Set onto fabric and roll gently to allow all sides of the broccoli to make contact with fabric. Use the edge of the stem to make short lines from the flowers as stems.
  • Dry and repeat process with celery and third paint color. Dry completely before using fabric.

How to:

Simple skirt

Step by step instructions:

  • Cut fabric to 1.5-2x hip measurement by desired length.
  • Fold fabric in half lengthwise with right sides facing and sew up the side seam.
  • Hem the bottom by folding under twice and sewing along the edge.
  • Make elastic casing: Iron or finger press the top edge over 1/4" and then fold down again, enough to fit elastic underneath + room for stitching. Sew along edge, leaving a 1" opening.
  • Insert elastic into casing: Use safety pins to hold one end of elastic in place and as something to hold on to. Be careful not to let the elastic twist!
  • Sew the two ends of elastic together. (You may want to try on first to ensure fit.)
  • Sew the 1" opening closed.
Enjoy!

By the way, if you're making this for a little one, let them help! Paige helped with hers and she thought it was the best thing ever. And! You could definitely try this technique on other things as well. The front of a shirt? A pillow? A tote? Your dog? Ok, no. But you get the idea! Be creative!

I hope you have fun with it!
And be sure to follow the rest of Skirt Week at Crafterhours, and even enter your own creations into the contest before June 8th for a chance to win awesome prizes!

Have a lovely start to your week!
Love,
Disney

P.S. Is there a prize for the blogger that lets her nail polish fade the longest? Check out that carrot-dipping photo. Gross. You might remember seeing that nail color in this post from April. Yeah. Same manicure. I consider it proof that my priorities are in line. :O) haha

  3. What a fun idea! I'd seen the celery, but not the others :) My kids would love! Does it help them eat their veggies too....wouldn't that be nice. I'm with you on the manicure...my DIY pedi is looking embarrassing. Thx for the reminder that my priorities are in order...haha! That's perfect.
PS. You misspelled "veggies" in your post title. I'm sure you will catch it soon :) Just wanted to give you a heads up!

  10. How cool! and dont worry about the comments. I do not comment very often as i do not have anything good to add to the post ( i mean something valuable for you and not just a "love it") I did comment on Paige´s post to cheer her in continuing doing diy staff. But my lack of commenting does not mean that i dont like your blog. I read every single post since a discovered it one year ago. keep the blog mood up! your blog rock. ;)

  14. It is unbelievably cute! Amazing! (Although I'm not sure I could win my protestant upbringing and miss-use food like that... but I know that is foolish, I only need to think how much I waste Resources all the time. This would anyway create something beautiful!)

  15. Love the idea!

  16. 1st let me say that it seems commenting is down everywhere. I think people are just so busy. I've been looking at my read counts and they haven't dropped, but my comments have...pinterest is spoil everybody who are pressed for time. So much easier to "like" or "pin" it than to leave a comment. So, don't take it too personally.

2nd I have to say I'm so happy that I signed up to follow your blog. You're so creative especially with your Paige and it helps me to create projects here at home for my two little ones.

We recently purchased plain socks and fabric paint to create fun socks as Paige did in her post. We are actually doing that project today. :)

Now, after seeing this fun post using produce...I think my kids will feel a bit differently about broccoli after doing this project too. In the hot weather you can never have too many light cotton skirts.

Thanks so much for being so inspiring to other Moms out there. I know I appreciate your blog very much and my guess is that many more Moms out there in blogworld do too. Keep up the awesome work!

  17. Such a cool idea! You could also use just one stalk of celery and do leopard print :) We used to do that with hair dye on the side of my head when I was all punk :P

  18. Hi, I would like to apologize since I have been using your inspiring blog to create fun for myself and my family and didn´t even leave a comment of appreciation because you create a lot of fun for others by posting your great and simple idea. Like this one with veggies. I don´t come from US so many good ideas which you consider "old" or "well-known" are pretty new to me. I will try this one with my girls. They come to me everyday wanting to create something and I have to send them away cause I don´t have ideas for their age (4,5 and 3y).

I think you do a great job and are appreciated. You just don´t know about it. Lack of time :o(

  19. Also a comment for a lovely Paige! Thank you for your post. I decided I would buy several pairs of socks and try to paint them with kids at my daugther´s party. I´m sure they would love to create something new and they would have something to take away, wear and remember. My daugther Mariana will be five in Sept and she will love the idea! Thanks.

A woman spoke at our quilt guild last month and she uses veggies and dyes to create her own fabric. She said to try bell pepper rings. I haven't done it yet, but thought I would throw out the idea. Also, she made stamps from potatoes...we used to do that as children. Anyhow, she now has her own line of fabric for Moda, so you never know where all that fabric painting might lead! Love your ideas
