Polka Dot Pumpkin DIY (Glitter All the Things!)

Glitter!!!!

Isn't it the BEST?? I've been oohing and ahhing over glitter projects from all over the web for ages, and I finally got around to busting out the sparkles last night. So! Fun! My first victim was a white pumpkin from my living room. I liked the simple, understated look of it, but thought that polka dots would take it to a whole new level of fantasticalness. I was so right on. I love it in dots!! I wish I had about three more in different shades of white. Pretty!

Here it is, in all its glory, outshining everything else in my living room:

It was so easy to make, you have to try it! Make glue stick circles, sprinkle on the glitter, brush off excess and let dry! I also painted the stem with a gold acrylic.

The same technique would work with all sorts of things I would think. Whetever you have around that needs polka dots on it. Which, I would hazard a guess, is a great many things.

Something else I felt needed a little shine? My flat headed sewing pins. Yellow is cute, but I thought a few glittery ones would be so fun! I finished them off with a little clear nail polish so the glitter wouldn't come off.

This:

To this:

So fun.

And then I went a little insane.
There was no one awake to stop me! Note to self: don't do glitter crafts alone at night with nail polish fumes in the air.

I really love the Altoids tin and the clothespin. And the tea light holders. Cute! You know what my husband didn't love? The measuring tape. Oops. I was like: "But we have another one! I only glittered one of them!" Then he reminded me that our other one is pink. Oh yeah. Sorry, dear!! Guess I know what I'm putting in his stocking this year.

So that bout of glitter-insanity brings me to a question for you guys: any idea what I can cover these with that will keep the glitter on? The clear nail polish works great on small things, like the pins, but I need something else for the others. Is there some sort of spray product out there or something? Anyone know?? I'd appreciate your suggestions!

Have a great and glittery day! And remember: glitter comes in allllllll sorts of colors. :O) So you could really do some damage out there. Glitter the world. :O)

Love!

  5. I'm loving how elegantly easy this is. Polka dots with a glue stick, brilliant!

How about using Stickles to do the things you want sealed?

  6. Modpodge maybe =)

  9. I spray mine with a matte acrylic spray. It does not eliminate "glitter shed" completely but makes a huge difference and gives a finish lsimilar to what you see on products in retail settings.

  10. This project rocks--I frickin' love glitter. Also I saw someone recommend an acrylic spray, which works well as a first layer--spray it down with an adhesive, and then use a clear gesso to cover the top to seal it in. If you try straight up without the middle sealer, though, you're going to have an intensently glitter-covered brush :-)

  11. The pumpkin is adorable! And I love the Altoid tin! Glitter makes everything look better :)

  12. I would try mod podge or some sort of clear varnish.

  13. You can get clear spray paint which might work well for the bigger things! Love all the glitter!

  14. krylons glitter blast is freakin awesome--the look of glitterfied...without the glitter mess!!!

  15. If you use clear spray paint it will take some of the sparkle and shine away. I'd use a clear acrylic sealer like Mod Podge brand in a glossy finish. :) LOVE the pumpkin.

  16. People around the web seem to fair rather well with modpodge, they even glitter shoes without glittering their sorroundings everytime they walk somewhere!

  17. I have used gem glue and then a clear coat polyurethane spray to glitter shoes. It absolutely stays on -- no trail of glitter when I walk. You can see my glitter shoe project and the supplies I used at www.gallimaufrygrove.blogspot.com . As others have said, mod podge does well, too.

  18. Oh my, I am really loving all those sparkles, so sassy. I'd vote Modpodge to seal it...but I don't know that it works.

  19. I'm yet another person to jump on the Modge Podge wagon. However! I would suggest mixing the glitter into the HP so that all sides are covered. A little glitter will mix into the glue when you are painting it on anyhow!

If you don't have any on hand, you can mix equal parts glue to water and it will work essentially the same. A word to the wise though - MP is better for items you will handle frequently. The homemade version is better for decorative purposes.

    Happy glittering!

  21. You can get spray acryllic sealer, and at Younghouselove.com they talk about Safecoat Acrylac (I think that's the name) for a low-VOC sealant that they use on lots of different projects, I think including some toy-type stuff for their toddler. I think Safecoat is a paint on, but not tiny and smelly like nail polish. You could probably also just use a basic spray on acrylic sealer but do 2 or 3 thin coats to help it really seal that glitter in.

  22. A lot of people have mentioned either Mod podge or a spray Acrylic sealer. Both are great options but i'd probably use some sort of light spray fixative before using the Mod podge as it's easy to brush off your glitter. You can also buy a clear spray laquer at most home improvement stores in the spray paint section. If you're doing something that won't be taking a lot of abuse or something that's going to be temporary like a flyer hairspray works really well.

  24. So cute! Love your style! I think I've seen modge podge in a spray can...might work?

  25. i was thinking mod podge too - i love that stuff!

  26. they sell clear spray paint that you could use to seal

  27. LOVE it! But I live in a house dominated by men =)

Btw: I sometimes use hairspray to fixate things like glitter. But it depends on the hairspray if it works properly + if you have to touch the thing your glittered often, I don't know if hairspray is the right choice. But for other things that just "lie around" it worked fine for me...

  28. You are too funny. :)

Half of your talent is in crafting, and the other half is in writing about it. That's why your blog is so awesome. :)
