"Wrapped in Bows" Scarf Tutorial!

First of all, thank you so much for all of your sweet condolences about my grandmother. You are such sweet friends and I really appreciate it right now. :O)

On a more positive note, I actually used my sewing machine last night! Hooray! Only to sew a few lines, but it was still satisfying.  The idea for this scarf popped into my head a few weeks ago, and while at the Dollar Tree the other day I picked up two simple little mustard scarves that were perfect for it. (They also had grey and fushia-tough choice!) It came together in no time, and Paige gasped with delight when I gave it to her. I love it when she loves it. :O)

The instructions are so simple:
  • sew two scarves together into one long one and trim the tassels from those ends
  • make approx. 6 even pleats by sewing the scarf to itself creating a loop as pictured
  • flatten the loops/pleats and tie a ribbon or string around the middle (I tied with yarn and then hot glued two of the tassels I trimmed off around it.)

Enjoy!

Using two scarves ended up being perfect for a kid-sized scarf. For an adult size, try three. Or use fleece yardage and cut it to twice your desired finish length.

And ok, obsessed mom here, but...I LOVE THIS CHILD!! Seriously. What a punkin face. I could eat her for breakfast. She pulled out the poses like a pro today. I didn't even have to tell her what to do. The photos of her laughing with glee are the result of me catching her with her finger in her nose, which she thought was hysterical. Charming, Paige. (I'll save those photos for future blackmail.)

Well, I think I'm going to go be lazy and do something fun. :O) Paige and the husband are on the couch as we speak watching A Charlie Brown Christmas, so I might go hide in the studio to avoid the squashing of my super-time-sensitive Christmas anticipation. I just can't start quite this early! :O)

Have a wonderful night, my dear friends.

Love,
Disney

  42. Very creative, the scarf is adorable as is your model. Just wondering why you would post a photo of your big girl sucking her thumb? Just seems like that photo could have been left out. I don't ever say anything negative but that is really bugging me -why post that?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Haha! I'm so sorry that's bugging you. This is probably my "mommy blindness" showing. See, since Paige was a baby, she's always sucked her thumb and twirled her hair. She still does it when she's tired, and I think it's so precious. It reminds me that even though she's a "big gir"l now, she's still my little baby in some ways. But it won't hurt my feelings if you don't want to look at it. ;o) And thank you for your compliments!

      Delete
  43. Omigosh she is just way too cute. Don't know how you stand it. Oh and I just noticed the comment above me...I sucked my thumb well into gradeschool...didn't even notice that Paige was doing it in a photo! Carry on, mama, carry on. ;)

  44. I love the scarf and I also love that your family has also started celebrating Christmas. My son has been watching "The Polar Express" aka "The Choo Choo Movie" for the last month. I feel like we're hiding a secret from the neighbors since its not even Halloween! Oh well, Christmas is magical and they're only little for such a short time! And rock on with your thumb sucking Paige! Smart girls still suck their fingers, as my daughter, who is also 5 is still sucking her two fingers when she's sleepy, too.

  50. I noticed the thumb sucking thing too... it doesn't bug me in the slightest, but do be careful! Thumb sucking past a certain age can really cause orthodontic problems later on down the road. My two dear cousins did past toddlerhood and they both and teeth and jaw problems they are still dealing with in adulthood. Just a little tip because she's so very very cute. (And I hate hate being pessimistic too!)

  51. I just came across your blog via Craftgossip and I love it! That is the cutest scarf and your daughter is BEAUTIFUL! I think I am going to have to make one for my beauty! I am now a follower of your blog. I hope you wouldn't mind, once I do make it, a review on my blog (www.lifestylesoiree.com) - of course with grandiose linking back to your blog?!? Thank you ~ and it looks adorable (and mustard is my favourite colour at the moment, too)

  54. This is so adorable!!! And what a beautiful little girl! Can you tell me how to do the pleats?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hmm, yes, I was struggling with how to give clear instructions...how about this:

Put one pin in your scarf about 6" from the fringed edge, then another pin approx. 10" down from the first pin. Bring the two pins together, forcing that section of the scarf into a loop. Sew the scarf together at the bottom of the loop, where the pins are meeting. Then repeat all down your scarf! I hope that makes sense. :O)

    2. Thank you! This totally makes sense to me! :) I am way excited to give this a go!

  70. i just found your blog today and am working my way through all of the posts and had to say this is one of the cutest things i've seen in a very long time. i'm going to have to file this away for when the special little girls in my world are big enough to wear scarves like this. :)

  71. Wow, it's an amazing idea. I think, I will crochet one for my friend as a birthday gift (if I'm fast enough). Just wonder, how long is your scarf? (or how long is one of the scarfs you used, so I can know how long I should make it for a grownup) Thank you :)

    ReplyDelete
  72. Oh, my nieces will all be getting these for the winter! What a terrific idea and SO easy. Your daughter wearing it sealed the deal. What a natural!

  73. Love the scarf! Couple questions for you... do you know what dollar store you bought the scarves from? It's probably not a national chain, but would be great news if it was so I could hop over to that one! Second, how did you connect the middle of the bows? Are they tied in knots in the back or sewn?

    ReplyDelete
  74. Made 3 of these! 2 for friends..and one for myself of course!! :P they came out soo cute!!! :D I'm glad that i read through the comments to see how to exactly make the pleats. Another thing for me was making the bows so that they came out cute! It is super easy though. I just goggled it! I also made sure when i tied the yarn around the bow, that i tied it tight. To me the bow looked a lot cuter and seems that the bow will stay put better. I did not use hot glue as mentioned. I guess we will find out if i regret that or not!! :) Thank you for sharing this!!! I love my new scarf!!
