Simple Ottoman Cover Tutorial! (With JoAnn's and HGTV)
A little while back I was contacted about reviewing some delicious fabrics from HGTV's new line for JoAnn's. Fun! Look at these gorgeous decor prints they sent. I love the bright, summery colors!
But I have to admit, I sat on it for a week rather stumped as to what to make. I actually would have loved to have some cheery throw pillows for the sofa, but I wanted to think of something a little more creative to share.
So, I have this ottoman.
I bought it when I was pregnant with Paige, which is great because nothing says "toddler friendly" like 100% silk, right? Yeah. It wasn't long before it looked like this:
Yikes. Let's get a close up of that, shall we?
Well, I did say that we wanted a more humble look to our home... :O)
I had it covered with a bit of ruffled fabric (from here) which I liked, but I was putting it back on 30 times a day!
So, we made a simple, bright, happy cover for it! I love it.
And it has a little surprise underneath...
It is so simple to make. Really! Basically, you're making darts in each corner and then sewing the two pieces of fabric together. BAM.
Want to make one?? C'mon, this is an easy one! You can do this.
- First you'll need to measure your ottoman:
across the long side
across the short side
and then measure the hight of the corner for your darts
Don't forget to add about 1/2'' to each measurement for seam allowance!
After you've trimmed your fabric to the length x width of the ottoman, use a ruler to mark off a square in each corner that is the hight you need for darts.
- Fold the corner so that the lines match up and pin.
- Sew along the line.
* before you trim, slip the cover over your ottoman to be sure the fitting is correct*
- Trim excess.
- Press your seams open. You don't have to do this part, but it's tidier.
- Then pin the two pieces together with edges folded under toward each other. The right side of both fabrics should be showing.
- Then sew along the pinned edge and you're done!
With the scrap that was left over I made Paige a little bow tie for her collection. :O) I love using every scrap if I can.
Thanks so much to HGTV and JoAnn's for sharing the love and helping make a happy little spot in our home!
Have a glorious day, now! :O)
