Quirky Heart Pillows Tutorial!

Sometimes I talk to my husband about my craft ideas.
Me: "...Hey. Hmm. I think I'm going to make some heart pillows! But instead of a regular heart shape--"
Husband: "--the shape of an actual heart?"
Me: "What? Ew! No!"
Husband: "Oh."
Haha. Crafts aren't his thing. Not that some guys wouldn't dig an anatomically correct heart pillow for Valentine's Day...I'm just not into stuffed organs on the sofa. :o/

Anyway, yay! It's Valentine's season! Candy and hearts and candy and pink and love and candy!!!
I wanted to bring a little bit of mild, non-cheesy Valentine's into our house, so Paige and I made these goofy little heart pillows. (btw I love that every time I share a craft I get to say "Paige and I" made it, I love how that little biscuit loves helping me in the studio.) We love the way these heart pillows look on the sofa under the "happy love wall" as I call it.
The trick to the quirky shape is to draw the pattern yourself! It's really fun to see how crazy you can make them. :O) And it's kind of nice to not worry about perfect lines.
Here's how!

  • 1 tape 4 or more pieces of paper together and hand draw a large heart. Remember that your flat heart will become 3D and decrease in size, so make it a little larger if you think you need to.
  • 2. Cut the heart out about 1/2'' outside the lines. Don't worry about it being perfect.
  • 3. Place the pattern on a double layer of fabric with a rotary mat underneath and cut out around edges.
  • 4. Glue trim to the front of the top layer the heart. Only glue until about 1/2'' away from the edge, so that your sewing machine needle doesn't have to go through the glue.
  • 5. Pin the heart pieces together with right sides facing and sew, leaving an opening large enough to fit your hand through.
  • 6. Stuff with polyfill and slipstitch closed. (Don't know how to slipstitch? Check this tutorial. It's easy!)

We've been meaning to try other drawing pillows, too. Little trees, houses, clouds, things like that. Doesn't that sound cute? I think Paige would have fun with that. :o)

Have a nice day. :o)
Love,
Disney
