Our DIY Polka Dot Wall!

We polka-did our wall today! Aaaahh, I love it so much!
I was thinking about this post over on A Beautiful Mess about their anchor stamped wall, which I'm over the moon for, but I know my husband wouldn't go for that. So I went opted for a nice safe polka dot instead. And to be even safer, I used paper dots instead of paint! So when we tire of it, we can easily change it out. I was worried that the paper might look a little cheesy up there, but it honestly looks like paint! It turned out beautifully. And with my beloved hole punch it only took a few minutes to do. In fact, Paige and I did it while cooking the chicken for lunch.

Here's how: (Pay attention, this is extremely complicated!)

  • Cut a bunch of paper circles. (We used a 2'' punch.)
  • Put a tiny bit of sticky tack on the back of each circle.
  • Stick on the wall.
We started at the bottom of the wall and used a ruler to be sure that each dot was 12'' apart. If you need to, cut some of the circles in half to make them fit on the edges of walls or door frames.

Isn't that so fun?! I briefly considered triangles before the polkadots, but I think these are a little more "me". How fun would these be in different colors in your kids' bedroom? This wall in our kitchen has been a bit of an eyesore to me for quite a while. Nothing looks right there! But these polka dots act as an art piece themselves, I sort of like the wall without anything else on it. I am happy.

Have a great Saturday!!
Love,
Disney

    1. Oh great idea! And yours turned out so cheery and cute. I was kind of going with the "things that are free right now" theme, but vinyl would be so easy!

  12. Dude! I have been thinking about doing this to our bedroom wall for MONTHS. I was thinking about using glitter paper, but oh yes this is an awesome idea! (... she says a bit egotistically, since she also thought of it...) I wasn't quite brave enough to try it out, but seeing these pictures let me know that I am so right about how cool this would look. Well done!

  16. sooooo fun!!! I love how you thought of polka dots as something "safe"for your husband.... hehehehe the least of the super girly things we are into...
I could see myself using the black strips where the holes had been punched to make a border, or something else... i love the contrast between the black and white, straight edge and circular shape cut out. so graphic. yeah, i know... i have a problem when it comes to throwing junk away... best to you Disney!

    1. I used about 70-75 circles for this wall, which took about three 12''x12'' scrap booking papers. :O)

  26. Hi Disney,

Firstly let me tell you, I'm a big big big fan of rufflesandstuff.. I am a graphic designer and an illustrator myself and so I know the hard work and time it takes to make everything that you do.. Why I am writing to you is, I have a blog of my own 'http://shamikasdoodles.blogspot.in/' , it's a doodle blog.. I love doodling and I am going to be doing a guest post on different bloggers.. From art to travel.. What I'l be doing is, making a doodle of you and Paige, writing a little bit about rufflesandstuff and posting it (this coming weekend, 9th march) I hope you let me do a guest post on you, as I would be more than happy to do it..
And I just realised I haven't introduced myself.. My name is Shamika Kocharekar, I am 25, a graphic designer and I am from Mumbai, India.. Waiting to hear from you..

P.S. Paige is an angel, and whenever I get married and have a daughter, I'd want her to look just like her :)

    Love,
    Shamika :)

  28. I did this, too, but with BIG dots. I LOVE how it turned out. http://alissadale.wordpress.com/2013/02/23/seeing-spots-redux/ I used rolls of masking tape for the big dots, and a tiny dab of rubber cement for the small ones (after testing to make sure they wouldn't pull the paint off). :o)
